My aunt is a nun with the Daughters of the Heart of Mary. It was her 50th anniversary as the handmaid of the Lord. We decided to surprise her and made an impromptu plan to fly to Goa. We simply needed a reason for a holiday. Our tickets were booked online and we were off. When we reached the venue, we were armed with a camera. Needless to say the look on her face was priceless!
This is just a one off incident but I can think of so many moments to pen where technology has made for a memorable holiday. Right from planning to execution to reminiscing, travel today is truly at the press of a button.
As a child I remember we had to book our train tickets 6 months in advance to be able to get them at all. Year round savings would make for the summer vacation once in two years perhaps. Hence a tight budget is what everyone worked on. A camera came with a roll of 24 or 36 pictures only, hence they were reserved for precious family shots. Life was pretty simple back then. The means were limited yet they made for a life worth living.
An overseas travel was an event in itself. People from far and wide would come to see your passport and your airplane ticket. Travellers cheques and credit cards were unheard of. Cash and valuables were always kept with self. Whoever heard of scanned copies of travel documents in case of loss or theft?
Today we have the world at our finger tips and yet somehow that is not enough. The atlas has shrugged but we still don’t know our neighbour. Present times Travel is easy, but finding a companion along the way is not.

Today’s prompt was “How technology makes travel easier today? “, hosted by Kate
Loved your last line. Though technology has made it easy to access…it has put lot of distance between people and relationships.
Very true Janaki…..and it is sad in a way….
Very true … the more we can access the world, the less we know our neighbors.
That is so true and sad really. We know more about someone we have never oftentimes than our own next door neighbor thanks to the internet.

Oh I recall the long travels we undertook – three nights in a train – but how we loved it! Life was so much simpler then – despite the technology! I liked the ‘twist in the tale’ at the end!
Thankfully we do know our neighbors–but never considered traveling with them. Great post 🙂 Jenn
How beautifully written. Moreover we all can relate to it… Life.. yet easy and complicated at same time..
Cheers!
